RETOUCHING
Digital photographic images will invariably need to be
colour retouched so that they will print satisfactorily.
This is often difficult for the customer to understand since an image
can have excellent colour on screen but then in print, lose much of the
vibrancy of the colours. This is due mainly to the differences between
the way images are constructed for display on a monitor and printing
with inks.
At its most simple, colour retouching would involve taking
cyan and magenta out of the areas of the image where there is a tendency
for them to 'muddy' the image. Our solution is to replace colour build
up with fine tonal detail on the black separation which directly enhances
overall quality. In addition, this has the effect of reducing the number
of colours in any one area and whilst minimising colour saturation or
'muddiness' also facilitates good register.
Colour retouching on continuous tone images is necessary for each printing
process in order to achieve the best possible results on press. However
flexographic printing is particularly sensitive and requires careful
and extensive retouching to print contone images in a satisfactory manner.
At Corniche we have retouchers with decades of experience in manipulating
contone images to print successfully and consistently on press.
